Now that spring is almost here, if you’re like most people, you’re probably looking for ways to make your home feel a little more exciting and fresh. It’s totally normal because we spend so much time at home during winter that even our favorite parts of your living space can start to feel a little tired. At M&M Lighting in Houston, we’re always ready to talk about ways that you can make your home feel updated and exciting. Check out four tips for spring updates below, then head over to our store or visit our online catalog to start getting some ideas.

Start Small

While the temptation to go all-in on an update can be tempting, it is a ton of work and it really might not be necessary. Sometimes adding or changing one or two things can transform a space so drastically that you won’t need to tear your house down to the studs. We always think updating your lighting is a great place to start. If your home is more than five years old, exchanging old fixtures for new ones in today’s contemporary style will make any room feel a lot different. Plus, having better light is never a bad thing. If the lights in one room are good, change up the decor a bit by swapping out a few pieces or rearranging what you already have.

Think About Your Goals

While most people’s New Year resolutions have been long forgotten by the time spring rolls around, if you want to update your home, thinking about what you would like to accomplish this year can help guide your design decisions. If you want to cook more, look at the lighting in your kitchen. Could you use some new pendant lights over your island to make prep easier? Would swapping out the lights in your office motivate you to write more or finish your business plan? If you had a ceiling fan in your covered patio, would you spend more time painting? Basing your update decisions on goals you want to achieve will help motivate you and it will make you feel better about spending money.

Go Room By Room

Prioritize your updates based on how much you’re going to be using each room in your home. If you know that your living room is going to be used a lot less now that spring is here, start with the rooms you will be using more frequently. Conversely, if you have been considering a big update, start with the room you aren’t using so you have the time to do the project at a pace that is more comfortable and less stressful. Installing that chandelier you’ve been thinking about for your dining room could be a great way to cap off a long weekend of painting. Adding new lamps to your family room might be a great way to start getting game night going again.

Don’t Forget Your Outdoor Space

One of the best parts about spring is getting to spend more time outside. While we may not have to dig our cars out of the snow every week like people in some parts of the country, winter in Texas is still pretty cold and not everyone wants to party outdoors. Some of our favorite spring updates are ones that can be done to improve the way your outdoor space looks or functions. If you’re getting a new grill, add some permanent task lights outside to make grilling into the night as easy as pecan pie. That covered patio could use a new outdoor ceiling fan and light fixtures to make it more comfortable and to set the mood properly and outdoor lights to highlight all of the work you’ve done on your landscaping are a gift that pays for itself every time you look out your windows.
