Why Is Lighting In Your Office Important?

Believe it or not, the lighting in your office space can either be very beneficial or completely detrimental to your workflow! The character and quality of the lighting in your space has the potential to significantly increase your productivity, but poor lighting can also decrease your morale, energy levels, and even cause eyestrain and headaches, which ultimately impairs your ability to get work done. That’s why selecting the right types of lighting can really make or break your space.

So, with that in mind, here are some of the things to consider when choosing lighting for your home office!

Assess the Natural Light

Before you can determine which lighting additions you need to make to your home office, it’s important to get a feel for the natural lighting in the space. Do you have a large window that provides lots of glorious, natural light?

If so, move your desk closer to that window, so you’re able to take advantage of every ray of sunshine that comes through. If your office is already full of natural light, you may not need much more than that.

Don’t Overdo It

When selecting lighting options for your home office, it can be really fun to look for the most stylish statement pieces. While we agree that lighting decor is the perfect way to spice up a space, it can also be really detrimental to your productivity — which completely defeats the purpose of your home office.

The lighting in your home office can be fun, and if you so choose, it can even make a statement. However, we recommend avoiding going too crazy. Too much light can cause your eyes to strain and your head to hurt, making your home office much more unpleasant than it needs to be.

So, rather than going grand with a bright, massive chandelier, why not opt for some stylish, smaller task lights instead?

Add a Task Light

Speaking of task lights, these are a must when lighting your home office. They help to ensure that there is ample, yet not too much, light coming into your office.

We recommend choosing a simple fixture or two that doesn’t take up too much space on your desk. If possible, it’s always a good idea to search for options that are adjustable, so you can change the height if necessary.

Another important factor to consider with task lighting is its placement. If put in the wrong spot, task lighting can create a distracting glare, and that defeats the whole purpose! When placing your lamp or light, test out a couple spots, and find one that works best for you. We recommend moving it throughout the day, to see if particular times create a glare or any distracting shadows.

Use LEDs

When choosing a bulb for your home accent, we recommend choosing LEDs. They are not only much more energy-efficient, but they also require less maintenance, which means you won’t have to worry about replacing them constantly!
